A variety of perspectives exist within the Christian community when it comes to political issues and political involvement. This comprehensive and readable book presents a political philosophy from the perspective that the Gospel pertains to all of life so Christians should be involved in political issues. In brief, this is an analysis of conservative and liberal plans to do good for the nation, evaluated in light of the Bible and common sense. In this ground-breaking book, recognized evangelical Bible professor Wayne Grudem rejects five mistaken views about Christian influence on politics: (1) ‘compel religion,’ (2) ‘exclude religion,’ (3) ‘all government is demonic,’ (4) ‘do evangel-ism, not politics,’ and (5) ‘do politics, not evangelism.’ He proposes a better alternative: (6) ’significant Christian influence on government.’ Then he explains the Bible’s teachings about the purpose of civil government and the characteristics of good or bad government. Does the Bible support some form of democracy? Should judges and the courts hold the ultimate power in a nation? With respect to specific political issues, Grudem argues that most people’s political views depend on deep-seated assumptions about several basic moral and even theological questions, such as whether God exists, whether absolute moral standards can be known, whether there is good and evil in each person’s heart, whether people should be accountable for their good and bad choices, whether property should belong to individuals or to society, and whether the purpose of the earth’s resources is to bring benefit to mankind. After addressing these foundational questions, Grudem provides a thoughtful, carefully-reasoned analysis of over fifty specific issues dealing with the protection of life, marriage, the family and children, economic issues and taxation, the environment, national defense, relationships to other nations, freedom of speech and religion, quotas, and special interests. He makes frequent application to the current policies of the Democratic and Republican parties in the United States, but the principles discussed here are relevant for any nation.

Bill Hicks performing for his first video, Sane Man, in Austin, Texas in 1989. en.wikipedia.org William Melvin Hicks was an American stand-up comedian in the 1980s and early 1990s. He challenged mainstream beliefs, aiming to “enlighten people to think for themselves.” Hicks used a ribald approach to express his material, describing himself as “Chomsky with dick jokes.” His jokes included general discussions about society, religion, politics, philosophy and personal issues. Hicks’ material was often deliberately controversial and steeped in black comedy. In both his stand-up performances, and during interviews, he often criticized media and popular culture as oppressive tools of the ruling class, meant to “keep people stupid and apathetic.” An inspired and inspiring truth teller, dangerous and brave and scary all at once. Richard Pryor Hickss stand-up act is about taking a stand and occasionally dodging a chair. Rolling Stone Savage, brilliant, funny, tremendously intelligent. John Cleese He never disappointed. David Letterman Bill Hicksblowtorch, excavator, truth-sayer, and brain specialist, like a reverend waving a gun around. He will correct your vision. Others will drive on the road he built. The article regarding Abraham Atiyeh’s planned treatment center for West Easton in the Aug. 16 Morning Call is confusing.

I read with some consternation and a great deal of concern the Aug. 8 article about farm preservation in The Morning Call. In 1999 and 2005, the vast majority of voters approved the Growing Greener campaign. I realize that the economy has dwindled, but what can be more important than preserving farmland in Pennsylvania? There is money for developers to destroy farmland and use the land for commercial, industrial and residential use (witness the David Jaindl deal with Lower Macungie mentioned in the article).

Doesn’t U.S. Rep. Charlie Dent owe the voters in his district a good reason why he voted “no” on House Bill 1586, a deficit-neutral $26 billion aid package for ailing school districts and state Medicaid programs, and states that are struggling to keep their heads above water? One of the other benefits of the bill is that it closed a loophole used by multinational corporations to reduce their U.S. taxes.
