A community working together to help homeless animals is a beautiful thing. When Peaceable Kingdom’s dog and cat food was stolen, all of our volunteers lost a lot of faith in humanity. Our faith was promptly restored when The Morning Call printed a story the day after the theft. Donations of cat and dog food arrived at our shelter in Whitehall Township within hours, monetary donations came in via our website and fundraisers were set up at various companies in the area. All we can say from the animals and volunteers is a heartfelt “thank you.” The Lehigh Valley is one special place where people care enough to put their concern into action.

Recent columns regarding the Cordoba mosque and cultural center reveal how hypocritical the left has become on this issue. They defend the Cordoba mosque on First Amendment grounds but then attack the criticism of the project as “xenophobia.” So the left defends the First Amendment rights of this imam, who seeks to build a mosque near ground zero and named after a mosque built to celebrate the conquest of Spain, but they attack citizens who exercise their First Amendment rights by objecting to such a national insult?

As I read the Aug. 23 story, “The recession means great business for discounters,” I was anxiously waiting for when the article would mention how some government stimulus money has enabled those businesses to thrive. It seems like that area of Allentown is trying to come back. The America on Wheels museum is not that far from the IronPigs baseball stadium and would be even closer to the ice hockey arena if the City of Allentown lands a team.

The article on the rare pink katydid discovered by a local nature enthusiast was an enjoyable read. This woman was provoked enough by its differences, and she chose to house it in her own terrarium. This insect was particularly vulnerable, due to its lack of camouflage, to be “an easy mark for the birds,” as so stated in the article.

As a member of America on Wheels museum, I felt the article put a very negative spin on the museum. I am not an avid car or truck enthusiast, but I have visited several times. I have found the vehicles displayed to be of outstanding quality. There are vehicles and artifacts showcased that cannot be found anywhere else. In addition, the museum provides a wonderful educational experience for its visitors, both by the explanations of the vehicles displayed and through the programs that have been presented.

Regarding The Morning Call Aug. 23 article, “Clashing over suburban ideals”: Normal childhood behavior is now something to insulate ourselves from and attempt to outlaw whatever children do that interrupts our serenity.
