Dear students:
Dear students:
Our democracy seems awfully fragile these days because of the Supreme Court decision allowing corporations to control spending for their choices in elections. We the people need to know what money is behind powerful candidates, and it is obvious that buying election results is not the mark of a free society. Support the federal DISCLOSE Act when it comes up for a vote in Congress in September to prevent dishonesty in money-use in this fall’s elections.
To the moron who stole the 50 bags of dog food from Peaceable Kingdom animal shelter in Whitehall Township, your chest must be swelling with pride. You stole food from dogs’ mouths. How proud you must be! I can see you strutting around your neighborhood saying, “I stole dog food!” or “Gaze upon the great dog food thief!” What is the black market value for a pound of dog food?
In response to Mr. Malitsch’s Aug. 20 letter, where he listed President Obama’s indifference to business and constitutional issues: I recall that the troubled assets relief program was on former President Bush’s watch. As far as controlling banks, if they did not circumvent the regulations that were already in place, we probably wouldn’t be looking at new financial reform. If the government didn’t help General Motors, the ripple effect would have cost us well over a million more lost jobs.
In his defense of the mosque near ground zero, Paul Carpenter states, “Hitler was a Catholic in good standing until the day he died.” This statement presumably is premised on the fact that the church never formally excommunicated Hitler.
These comments by Allentown City Councilman Michael Donovan were taken from his blog, Inclusion , and his emails.
Q: You have been a vocal supporter of the IronPigs fireworks show, which takes place less than a mile from your home. Some see them as a nuisance. Why don’t you?
After Northampton County sells Gracedale, what will be next on its chopping block to sell and make money? The next thing should be the Northampton County Prison, which is a big money-losing project. The prison takes money away from others to house people who break the laws of the land and then get to live in their dorm rooms and eat good food every day. Do Mr. Stoffa and Mr. Angle, in their way of thinking, have the prison next on their chopping block?
About two weeks ago, Allentown Councilman Michael Donovan touched off a firestorm when he publicly criticized the Lehigh Valley IronPigs postgame fireworks show, saying they are loud and too frequent. The councilman’s criticism helped propel the minor league club to make adjustments to cut down on noise and reduce the number of shows that get pushed back due to rain. Morning Call reporter Jarrett Renshaw explores the issue.
While all parties maintained a spirit of cordiality and mutual understanding, no
new promises emerged from this week’s talks between the leaders of Israel and
the Palestine Authority (PA) that offered tangible hope for a major breakthrough
in resolving the more than 60-year-old conflict.
